Deslam the News: Privacy Policy

Deslam the News is an app and Safari extension for iPhone, iPad and Mac, made by James Veitch. It rewrites sensational wording in news headlines on your device, and marks every change so you can always see what the paper wrote.

The short version

Deslam the News does not collect, store or share your personal data. It has no servers, no accounts, no analytics, no advertising and no tracking. Everything it does happens on your device.

What it reads

To rewrite headlines, the Safari extension reads the text of the web pages you open in Safari while it is switched on. It does this on your device. It does not send page text anywhere, and it does not keep a record of the pages you visit.

Safari asks you to allow the extension on websites because it has to read and change the text of news pages. You choose where it can run in Safari's settings, and you can pause it on any site from its menu.

Apple Intelligence

If you turn on the optional Apple Intelligence setting, headlines are rewritten by Apple's on-device language model. The headlines stay on your device. Deslam does not use Apple's Private Cloud Compute or any other online service.

What it stores on your device

Deslam keeps your settings on your device: whether it is on, which sites it is paused on, whether changes are underlined, whether Apple Intelligence is on, and which kinds of wording it changes. The app and the extension share these settings through storage on your device that only Deslam can read. Copies of any reports you make (the last 200) are kept in the extension's storage on your device, including the address of the page you reported. None of this leaves your device, and deleting the app deletes it.

Reporting a mistake

If you report a headline Deslam got wrong, it writes an email for you in your own mail app, or copies the report for you to paste. The report contains the headline as published, Deslam's version, what was changed and whether the rules or Apple Intelligence changed it, the address of the page, the version of Deslam, whether you are using Safari on a Mac, iPhone or iPad, and anything you choose to add. You can read and edit it first, and nothing is sent unless you send it yourself. If you do, it is used only to fix Deslam's mistakes, and you can ask for it to be deleted at any time.

TestFlight

If you test Deslam through Apple's TestFlight, Apple may share crash reports, and any feedback you choose to send through TestFlight, with the developer. Apple handles this under its own TestFlight terms and privacy policy.

Children

Deslam does not collect data from anyone, including children.

Changes

If this policy changes, the new version will be posted here with a new date.
